In the Value-Based Payment (VBP) world, payers and providers win or lose together—and that requires an entirely new approach and mindset from all parties. This is especially true now, as both health plans and their clinicians in value-based arrangements face even higher levels of financial risk as a direct result of COVID-19.
Payers must become success enablers—they need to arm their provider networks with insight to proactively identify, intervene, and close the loop on all their patients, including those with risk factors for severe COVID-19 illness. Providers need to target high-risk patients—both COVID-19 related and not—based on active contract parameters, enact evidence-based interventions, and see their impact on performance. It is also critical for both payers and providers that current events do not negatively impact willingness to enter value-based contracts in the future.
